About Cloth and Notions
Cloth and Notions is Owned and run by me, Rachel Thomas.
A keen sewer growing up, I eventually found my path through School and after doing an Arts Foundation I went on to study a BA in Costume for Stage and Screen at The Arts Institute in Bournemouth, before moving to London to work within the Theatre industry.
For 5 years I had various jobs within the Costume and Theatre world, (and still do). I have worked as a Freelance Costume Maker, Alterations assistant, assistant to a Supervisor, Dresser, Wardrobe Assistant, Deputy and Wardrobe Mistress. All of these jobs I have absolutely loved, but feel it’s time for a new adventure.
The memories of my childhood spent in haberdashery shops, looking through all the threads and braids and planning new projects, combined with a general frustration about the lack of quality haberdashers in South East London, where I now live, is what led me to this point.
This is what I’m going to do. I’m going to combine my general love of Haberdashery, and my love of meeting and talking to people who share my passion, with those memories of the local haberdashers and my knowledge that I have gained through my career in the Theatre Costume industry.
The outcome: Cloth and Notions, a Quality Haberdashery. Inclusive, open to all, friendly, and particularly useful if you work in Costume, or Wardrobe. I hope to get to know all you other local creators and makers, I’m starting small as an online retailer but I have big plans, and I’d love to hear from you.
